The police have arrested one Emmanuel Ukonu, a 75-year-old man, for falsely claiming to be a pensioner in Abia State.
The spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, Udeviotu Onyeke, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abaon Thursday that Ukonu, who hails from Obuzo in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, was arrested in Umuahia last week.
Onyeke said the suspect was arrested while presenting himself in the ongoing pensioners’ verification.
He said Ukonu was nabbed at the Bureau of Establishment and Pension Office, Umuahia by intelligence operatives of the Abia State Police Command on a tip-off.
The spokesman said on interrogation, Ukonu confessed that he had never worked in either the civil service or private establishment.
He was said to have claimed that one City Nworu, who is said to be a student of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, brought him to make claims as a pensioner.
He also said it was his first time of presenting himself for such verification.
Udeviotu said the police had stretched their dragnet to apprehend Nworu, who is now on the run, to hasten the investigation and their arraignment. (NAN)
