The sacking of 17 local government chairmen and councillors in Enugu State by the Peoples Democratic Party’s government has pitched chairman and secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state against each other.
Enugu State Government had, on Monday, sacked chairmen and councillors in the state and directed them to hand over to heads of personnel in the council areas.
While the APC Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Kate Ofor condemned the state government’s action, the chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye said Ofor’s statement did not represent the interest of the party.
Ofor, in a statement, had commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the dissolution of the elected council chairmen and councillors whose tenure expired on Monday.
However, she added that the directive to hand over the administration of the councils to the Head of Personnel of each of the councils is ‘glass-half-full.’
She claimed that the dissolution was not in the spirit and letters of Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution, which she further stated clearly guaranteed the administration of the council.
According to her, the APC in the state had challenged the setting up of a caretaker committee to administer the councils in the state in a suit No. E/362/2015 before Justice R. O. Odugu of the state High Court 6.
But, Dr. Nwoye, in another statement, said Mrs. Ofor was on her own, adding that at no time did the party meet to discuss the issue.
“The publicity secretary has not been attending our state exco meetings. She has been operating on her own.
Therefore, any statement authored by her, should be disregarded by the public on behalf of the party.”
Nwoye distanced the party from the dissolution of the councils and what he described as frivolous statements by Ofor.
He disclosed that APC in the state had set up a three-man committee to investigate Ofor’s alleged misconduct. (Daily Sun)
