The House of Representatives member for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency of Abia State, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has called for the urgent intervention of the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Works to avert the threat by gully erosion to cut off two communities: Nkwonta and Umunnekwu, from other communities.
She noted that the communities, which are agrarian, have had their economic and social well being affected by the rampaging gully erosion.
In a motion sponsored during plenary, Onyejeocha added that some other communities in Umunneochi LGA are also affected, and the gullies are found at Isuochi Secondary School, Umuada and Uhuologbo communities, and some other areas.
She lamented that despite the suffering of the people all these years, the federal government has failed to remedy the situation. The lawmaker warned that unless an immediate intervention is made before the end of the 2015 rainy season, many houses could cave into the gullies, with risk to lives and properties. She also sought inclusion of the matter in the 2016 budget.
The members, following a voice vote by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, resolved that its committees of Environment, Work and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) when constituted, to work with relevant government ministries for urgent action. (Thisday)
