The Anambra State Government has commenced rehabilitation of the collapsed portion of the flyover at the New Motor Parts Market, Nkpor on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.
The Commissioner for Works, Chief Law Chinwuba, told newsmen in Awka that the government decided to rebuild the failed portion of the bridge and be refunded later by the Federal Government.
“The Enugu-Onitsha Expressway is the major road linking the Western part of the country through the South-East to the North. Everything should be done to save the road,” he said.
Chinwuba said the government had already intervened on Kilometre 24, Onitsha-Owerri Road where a similar bridge was threatened as well as built the Nkisi end which was also dilapidated.
“We have arrested the deplorable situation at Kilometre 24 on Onitsha-Owerri Road.
“We also arrested the Nkisi portion that was totally bad.
“We intervened and restored the road. Everybody is working.
“The Umunya area is one of the areas we will also work on before Christmas.
“We have also rescued a bridge at Umuawulu in Awka South Local Government and Ogbunka in Orumba North council,” he said.
The Tide correspondent reports that the bridge collapsed due to downpour.
Obiano had after inspecting the area last week called on the Federal Government to look into the deplorable condition of the bridge as well as other failed sections of the expressway.
