Nigerian Navy on Training with U.S Coastal Guard

Twenty-four officers of the Nigerian Navy are participating in a four-week intensive United States Coast Guard Boarding Officer training.

The programme, which kicked off on Monday, August 30, is being attended by six trainers from the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, Virginia.

The American personnel are in Lagos to lead the capacity builder to strengthen maritime law enforcement capabilities in Nigerian waters, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.

Sponsored by the U.S. Africa Command, the training will explore techniques and procedures for maritime law enforcement at-sea in a safe and professional manner.

A statement by the Embassy in Nigeria said it will highlight more challenging scenarios and tactics in the use of force, evidence processing, arrest procedures, and perseverance.

The participants will explore countering illicit maritime activities such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

Others are trafficking of weapons, narcotics, people, and piracy and oil infrastructure insecurity.
