The Oraukwu community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State is in crisis over the selection of traditional ruler for the town.

The development is sequel to the disagreement on how best to select a traditional ruler to replace the past one who died more than five years ago.

The dispute is between those who insist that the constitution of the town must be followed strictly in selecting a new monarch in the community and those who feel that certain rigid measures should be dropped in order to make the selection easier.

Briefing DAILY SUN in his palace over the issue, the Regent of Oraukwu, Chief F.N. Chiedu said that his cabinet insisted that the constitution of the town must be strictly followed to the letter in selecting the new traditional ruler.

The Regent who was surrounded by members of his cabinet said he would not compromise the constitution of Oraukwu Community in order to produce an unpopular candidate for the town.

According to him, Igweship in the town rotates around the villages and that the village whose turn its to produce the Igwe produces three candidates out of whom one would be elected.

According to him, the election was normally done by members of Regent-in-Council, members of executive of the Town Union, and one representative from each of the villages.

He frowned at the situation whereby some members of the community wanted to circumvent the provisions of the constitution to impose a candidate on the town as the traditional ruler.

The Regent said that the group committed abomination by breaking into his house on December 30, 2015 when he was not around and pretentiously posed in photograph as having presented the elected Igwe to him.

He said that neither himself nor members of Regent-in-Council was around when the group came and later went around to announce that they were received by him.

“What they did was an abomination against Oraukwu and they have to sacrifice to cleanse the land before we go back to discuss the issue of installing Igwe”.

He called on both Idemili North Local Government Council and the Anambra State government not to recognize any person who may be presented by any group of people outside the Reagent-In-Council as the Igwe of Oraukwu community.

The Regent also warned the mischief makers to drop their antics and tow the path of peace in the interest of all and sundry.

Present at the briefing included Chief B.C. Ochndo, Chief Onwurah Ichie S.S. Omeni, Ichie J.N. Okakpu, Ichie B.C. Onyekwulume, Ichie A.O. Ogobido and Ichie F.I. Arinze all members of Regent-in-Council.

When contacted a member of the cabinet, Chief A.N. Ugochukwu, who allegedly led the group to the palace of the Regent declined to comment but said that the Regent-in-Council was taking the matter too far.
