Five policemen killed as gunmen attack checkpoint in Enugu

Five policemen were on Wednesday night killed by gunmen at a checkpoint at Obeagu-Uno, shortly after the Nyaba bridge, in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State.

The checkpoint is along the Amechi – Obeagu Uno – Amodu – Umueze road, leading to Agbani, the headquarters of Nkanu West local government area of the state.

The Easterner gathered that the unknown gunmen attacked the checkpoint around 7 pm, killing five policemen while their Hilux patrol van was burnt. Four cops were initially thought to have been killed but one more body was later discovered in the nearby bush.

It was also learnt that one local vigilante operative and one pastor said to be an indigene of Ugbawka in Nkanu East local government area were hit by stray bullets’ and were later confirmed dead in a private hospital in Agbani.

As at the time of this report, the Enugu State Police Command was yet to issue a statement on the incident.
