Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has stated that the Federal Government is not doing enough in the country’s educational sector, saying it was the reason a greater percentage of our youths are illiterates.

He said he expected both the past and present Federal Government administrations to have made adequate arrangements for the youths to acquire basic education first before taking to other trades or professions but to no avail.

Anyaoku, who spoke yesterday at the commissioning ceremony of Emeka and Bunmi Anayaoku Foundation Centre located near his residence at his country home, Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, added that if the government had increased the budgetary allocation to education and implement it to the letter, there would not have been a lot of uneducated youths in the country as it is today.

On why he decided to set up the foundation and build its centre in his Obosi country home, Anyaoku who also used the occasion to celebrate his 91st birthday, declared: “I chose to build my foundation centre in Obosi, my home town as a demonstration of my attachment and regard for my people.”

Governor Chukwuma Soludo who commissioned the centre, lauded Anayaoku whom he identified as a core diplomat for thinking alongside his administration’s avowed determination to improve educational standards in the state.

In his congratulatory message on the occasion, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria said: “Chief Anyaoku represents the best of a tragically vanishing breed in our country – a gentleman of honour, a man of strong character and values, a man who’s impact in the world and at home was and remains an inspiration to millions including my humble self.”
