Workers in Enugu State are angry with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi over his decision to acquire Prado Jeeps as official vehicle for members of the State House of Assembly as well as other political appointees.

Labour unions in the State, made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress made their feelings known, Monday.

In a letter addressed to Governor Ugwuanyi, which was made available to newsmen, the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council condemned what it termed ‘the harvest of Prado Jeeps’ which it says does not speak well of the State in economic management at this point of economic recession.

They observed that the car loan for legislators as listed by the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission approves N5.3m for State Assembly members.

In the letter signed by state chairman Comrade Igbokwe C. Igbokwe, and Theo Obasiana, Secretary, the labour group said it was unacceptable for government to buy official vehicles of over N11m when it’s workers were the least paid and with backlog of gratuity and pension.

They warned that the government action at a time when other outstanding salaries were owed workers was a move that would generate serious industrial crisis in the state.

The workers, therefore, urged the governor to as a matter of urgency implement the adjusted salary which is captured in 2015 budget to assuage the economic tension and anger of workers. (Daily Post)

  1. Expensive Jeeps for commissioners or what have you in this current national economic quagmire is a “thumbs down” for the governor. It’s an ill advised venture. Enugu is one of the poorest states in Nigeria in terms of revenue generation and federal govt. Subventions. Scarce resources should therefore be managed with utmost priority.
