The police in Enugu State are on the trail of a councillor of Nsukka Legislative Council, who, on Tuesday, led some youths in Eha-Alumona community of Nsukka LGA, to attack the Umabor police station, according to Daily Times.
Among the things destroyed includes police vehicles, windows and other valuable at the station.
A young man in the area, who pleaded anonymity told the Daily Times that the protest was as a result of indiscriminate arrest of youths in the area led by the DPO Joseph Otuboh (DSP) at relaxation spots.
“For some time now the DPO has been going round the area with his boys arresting youths who go to relaxation spots to drink and watch football matches. They take nothing less than N10, 000 from them before they are released. I think this was what angered them and made them to protest,” he said.
Daily Times gathered that the quick intervention of the chairman of the Nsukka council, Hon. Charles Ugwu, prevented the youth from burning down the station.
Ugwu who hails from the community added that he had to plead with his kinsmen.
“When I got wind of what was happening here in my community, all I could do at that point was to plead with them to stop that whatever; that they should follow the right channel and due process to seek redress, and not by destroying the property of the police”, he said.“I have met with relevant security stakeholders in Nsukka LGA on this issue. The council will ensure this ugly incident will not happen again. The council will replace all the things damaged by the youth,” he said.
As of the time filling this report gathered the DPO of the station, Otuboh had been summoned by the Enugu Police Command to explain what led to the destruction of his station.
