Scores of Umuahia residents sharing Enugu Electric Distribution Company, EEDC electric transformer with Government House, Umuahia have been thrown into total darkness for upwards of one month due to inability of Abia State Government to pay accumulated electricity bill of about N100 million.

Mostly affected are residents of No. 1, Factory Road, made up of blocks of houses; the entire factory road including private schools operating on that street, numerous shops and other business premises around the area have been in darkness.

The residents who are up-to-date in the payment of their electricity bill have been disconnected by the EEDC and thrown into darkness for one month by the electricity company which has even continued to send consumption bills to them despite the fact that they have not seen light in the last one month.

The management of the company has also been reluctant to relocate these people to other lines to enable them enjoy electricity as the Abia State Government, according to them, was not willing to pay the bill.

When Vanguard visited Umuahia district office of EEDC, a senior manager in the Operations Department, confirmed that the residents of the area have been thrown into darkness because of the government’s debt.
