One of Tony Pulis’ changes at the weekend was the shock inclusion of Victor Anichebe as the lone man up front with Salomon Rondon suspended and Rickie Lambert rested after the Swansea game.

It was the Nigerian striker’s first Premier League start since May, Sky Sports reports.

But it proved an inspired move by the Baggies boss, with Anichebe a constant menace to the Magpies defence.

“He’s a top player,” Pulis said.

“When Victor turns up he’s a top player.

“He’s shown that, he was a handful for them and they just couldn’t handle him.”

Anichebe is, however, a doubt for the home game against Stoke City on Saturday after limping off late on against Newcastle with what appeared a hamstring pull.
