The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the list of the top 50 secondary schools in Nigeria based on the result of the 2015 May/June examination, with the Marist Brothers Juniorate, Uturu in Abia State, the number 2 in Nigeria, leading 15 other secondary schools in the South-East in the list compiled by the examination body.

Grundtvig International School, Oba, Anambra State is the 6th in Nigeria and 2nd in the South-East, while Mea Mater Elizabeth High School, Agbani, Enugu State, came 7th in Nigeria and 3rd in the South-East.

A state by state breakdown of the list shows that Abia and Anambra states with equal number of 6 schools each, have the highest number of schools in the list.

However, while 4 of the 6 schools in Abia State are located in Aba alone, and one each in Uturu and Umuahia, the state capital, each of the 6 schools in Anambra State are located in six different towns of Oba, Amaokpala, Nkpor, Nanka, Onitsha and Uga.

Enugu State follows Anambra and Abia States with 2 schools in the list. The two schools are located in one town, Agbani, in Nkanu West Local Government Area, near Enugu capital. The two schools were incidentally both established by the then governor of Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, who is from Agbani.

Ebonyi and Imo states have one school each in the list, located in Enuagu-Onicha and Umana-Orlu, respectively.
