Russia launched hypersonic missiles against Ukraine last week, CNN reports.

This is the first time ever such missiles are used in combat.

Hypersonic missiles travel five times the speed of sound and after launch, they fly into space, but then come down and fly on a flight path similar to an airplane.

According to experts, hypersonic missiles’ low trajectory and their high-speed and maneuverability make them difficult for America’s missile defense satellites and radars to detect.

CNN quoted some officials of the US defence to say that President Vladimir Putin’s government launched those missiles on Ukraine last week, basically to test the weapons and also send a message to the US and its allies about Russian capabilities.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the use of the missiles on Saturday, saying it was launched against a military ammunition warehouse in western Ukraine on Friday.

The ministry said the hypersonic missiles destroyed the structure in the Ukrainian village of Delyatin.

The defense ministry claimed it used its hypersonic “Kinzhal” missiles.

“On March 18, the Kinzhal aviation missile system, with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse of missiles and aviation ammunition of Ukrainian troops in the village of Delyatin, Ivano-Frankivsk region,” the ministry said, according to CNN.
