Akwa police, Anambra State has commenced investigation into the death of a 200 level student of Industrial Physics in Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, who allegedly committed suicide in the wardrobe of the students’ Hall of residence.

The death of the deceased who hailed from Isuikwuato Local council of Imo State could not be ascertained at press time, but there have been stories surrounding his death.

Sources said the student was often heard arguing with a female who was suspected to be his mother over poor funding of his academic programme.

“He was often heard quarrelling with his mother over money. He used to ask her if you cannot fund my education, why did you bring me to school?

“For some time, has not been eating”, his roommates were quoted as saying.

However, the puzzle was that he was hanged by the neck with a rope tied to the iron bar on which clothes are hung in the wardrobe, with his legs on the ground.

The Sunday Independent gathered that this happened when his roommates were away and when the door was broken, he was with a rope around his neck.

The Chief Security Officer of the Institution, Ken Chukwura, said the deceased’s roommates had been invited for questioning while investigation had commenced.

He called on the students to go about their activities without fear as the situation had been put under control.

A combined team of school security, the Nigeria Police Force and top principal officers of the institution were present before the corpse was carried to the mortuary.

Ikenga Tochukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that investigations had commenced.

He said: “We are still gathering information about the incident. We have invited some of his friends. For the police, it is after the details are gathered that we know whether it is suicide or not.”
