Former governor of Enugu State and senator representing Enugu East senatorial district, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani has slammed the Labour Party for claiming that its candidate for the senatorial election, Mr Oyibo Chukwu was poised to win the election before his unfortunate killing by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Wednesday.

The national chairman of Labour Party, Mr Julius Abure, had on Thursday, while reacting to the shocking killing of the party’s senatorial candidate by gunmen, called on the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), to postpone the election, saying the party was on the course to win the election before the incident. He said the postponement would enable the party conduct a fresh primary to nominate a replacement for the deceased candidate.

But tweeting from his verified Twitter page, @ChimarokeNamani on Friday morning, Senator Nnanani, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the election, lampooned the Labour Party for their “deception and social media stunts”, wondering how a largely unknown candidate could have defeated a sitting senator and past two-term governor of the state.

The senator who welcomed the postponement of the election by INEC, said it would expose to the world how it had been scammed by the Labour Party.

His three-part tweets read:

“We welcome any opportunity for INEC to postpone the senatorial election in Enugu East Senatorial District. While we strongly condemn the senseless killing of the LP senatorial candidate for the election by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, /1.

2.
deeply sympathize with all the bereaved, and urge the investigative agencies to fish out the perpetrators, any suggestion that the deceased was favoured to win the election is ridiculous to say the least. It is only a party that thrives on deception and social media stunts

3.
that would claim it was about defeating a sitting senator and past two-term governor of the state with a candidate that was largely unknown (may his soul rest in peace) Indeed the postponement will allow the world to see how it has been scammed by the Labour Party.#Chimaroke”

Earlier on Thursday, Senator Nnamani had expressed dismay over the killings, sending his sympathies to the affected families.

His tweets read:

“I am deeply saddened by yesterday night’s news of the brutal attacks of PDP and Labour party members. These are honorable human beings and legitimate political actors whose untimely deaths are condemnable. #Chimaroke

While awaiting official confirmation,I write in total condemnation of attacks in Enugu State that led to fatalities. Notably, parties involved include APC, PDP and Labour.I convey my sympathies to all the affected families and loved ones.May their souls rest in peace.🙏🏿 #Chimaroke”
