The Senate yesterday called for an end to incessant bloody clashes between Ezza and Effium indigenes of Benue and Ebonyi states, which have resulted in several deaths.

This followed the killing of 53 persons during the clashes in recent times, according to the Senator representing Benue South, Abba Moro.

The Senate consequently urged the Federal Ministry of Defence, the police and other relevant security agencies to redouble their efforts at ending the unacceptable carnages.

The Upper Chamber specifically urged the military or the police to establish security bases at the boundaries between the two warring communities in order to restore peaceful coexistence in the area. The resolutions of the Senate followed its consideration of a motion, titled: “Incessant Bloody Clash Between Border Communities of Benue and Ebonyi states: Urgent Need for Senate’s Intervention.”

The motion was sponsored by Abba Moro.

In his lead debate, the senator noted that human existence is primarily about life as well as respecting, protecting and placing value on its sanctity.

“Sadly, however, the principle of shared polyphony and feeling of comradeship no longer exist between the bordering communities of Ezza in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State and Effium in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, following ceaseless communal clashes between the duo, which always lead to killing of one another and destruction of valuables and means of livelihood worth hundreds of millions,” he said.

The Red Chamber also urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to quickly mobilise relief and rehabilitation materials to displaced Ezzas in the recent attacks.
