A viral video has shown a police officer engaging a young lady in an altercation and physical assault while on duty at a checkpoint in Obeagu Awkunanaw, along Agbani Road, in the State.

Daily post reports that the officer yet to be identified was sighted in the video making the rounds on social media, assaulting a lady over a disagreement as some residents gathered to watch the happening.

The video has received outrage, with many Nigerians demanding sanctions against the policeman.

Reacting to the trending video, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu said the Command would not entertain such acts of “unprofessionalism by personnel under his watch”.

In a statement by the command’s spokesman, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner directed the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (State CIID) to begin immediate investigation and disciplinary sanction of the officer involved in the assault.

The statement warned officers of the command against such conduct.

The CP also enjoined the witnesses and the victim to approach the State CID to drop their statement which would help in the investigation.

The statement reads in part, “The CP, while condemning the conduct of the Policeman as shown in the video, has warned personnel of the Command against conducting themselves unprofessionally or disrespecting the fundamental human rights of citizens while performing their duties. He made it clear that anyone found wanting will be made to face maximum disciplinary sanctions.

“Also, residents of the State have been enjoined to promptly report Police Officers of the Command found conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner to the nearest Police Station or by calling the Command’s emergency hotlines on: 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 or 08098880172.
