The National Youth Service Corps on Tuesday swore in the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members across the country.

In Ekiti State, the Director-General, NYSC, Brigadier General Muhammed Fadah, advised corps members to desist from using social media for propagation of fake news and divisive tendencies.

Fadah said the youth should rather harness the positive benefits in social media to benefit their lives and aid the country’s unity and development.

The NYSC DG, represented by NYSC Ekiti State Coordinator, Mrs Mary Chikezie, spoke at the swearing in at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Ise-Orun/Emure Ekiti.

“I urge you to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fuelling hatred and other negative purposes, but instead, deploy the same for the promotion of national unity and development,” he said.

In Abia State, 1,343 corps members were sworn in at Permanent Orientation Camp at Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.

The State Coordinator, Mr Julius Ekeh, said the corps members, which cut across the six geopolitical zones of the country, comprised 615 males and 728 females.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Chief Judge of Abia, Justice Onuoha Ogwe, represented by Justice Uchenna Enwereji, administered the oath of allegiance on the corps members.

In Abuja, Fadah urged youth corps members to embrace vocational training.

According to him, white-collar jobs are no longer readily available.

“You are, therefore, encouraged to use the opportunities for self-employment offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme by choosing from any of the skill areas.

“Make yourselves available for the training, which starts from the orientation camp, while management will also continue to work with relevant stakeholders for the success of the programme,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday at plenary passed for concurrence, the NYSC Trust Fund Bill 2022.

The bill titled ‘National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill, 2022’ was passed by the House of Representatives in April 2022.

The bill seeks to establish NYSC Trust Fund for the purpose of providing a sustainable source of funds for the NYSC, skill acquisition, training and empowerment of corps members, training and retraining of the personnel of the NYSC, development of camps and NYSC formations and facilities therein; and for related matters.
