A yet-to-be identified operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been killed in Ebonyi State by gunmen. Another operative was reported to have sustained injury.
He was killed when gunmen attacked an NDLEA team in the Ezzamgbo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway in the early hours of yesterday.
A credible source said the incident happened at about 3am.
The source further disclosed that the gunmen also collected a riffle from the officers before setting ablaze the NDLEA patrol van.
The source said: “On 20th Feb. 2022, Sunday morning, at about 3:00am at a drug checkpoint on Enugu Abakaliki Expressway at Ezzangbo, unknown gunmen attacked drug law enforcement agents and shot two drug officers on duty.
“One officer was killed while another one who was shot on the leg, had a fractured his leg. One riffle was collected; one Hilux patrol van was burnt and the names of the victims have not yet been disclosed.”
The attack came barely six days after three policemen were shot dead by gunmen at Ezillo axis on the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway in Ishielu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.
The three policemen were short in front of the Ezillo police station having mounted a roadblock on the highway. The attack was around 12 midnight.
The policemen were on a routine stop-and-search operation when the gunmen stormed the place and opened fire on them, killing three of the men.
Vanguard reported that Ebonyi State NDLEA spokesperson Audu Benji, said he was in a meeting when contacted. He however promised to send a feedback after the meeting.
Police spokesperson, Loveth Odah, could not also be reached.
