Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday shot and killed a member of a vigilante group in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.
The vigilante member, Mr. Fidelis Nnadi according to a community source who spoke to Daily Post on condition of anonymity, was killed by fleeing gunmen along the Okwelle- Umuezealaibe road.
Nnadi was said to have left his village, Ogwuaga to Okwelle in Onuimo Local Government Area to buy some items and while on his way back, was intercepted by a gang of gunmen also on the road.
Daily Post further learnt that the gunmen had already kidnapped a mother and child elsewhere and were passing through the community but somehow identified Nnadi as a security operative.
A source who pleaded anonymity said the kidnappers accosted him, fired gunshots at his chest at close range, shot him dead, and zoomed off immediately.
The source quoted the vigilante security Commander as saying that the slain operative had informed him of his trip to Okwelle to purchase some items before he left, only for them to receive news of his murder.
Already, residents of his Ogwuaga Abba community in Nwangele local government have been thrown into mourning over the death, even as apprehension has enveloped the community.
Police spokesperson for Imo State, CSP Michael Abattam confirmed the incident and promised to provide details shortly.
