Gunmen on Wednesday evening shot and killed the director-general of Science and Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Enugu, Prof. Samuel Ndubisi.
The DG was killed on Port Harcourt Expressway alongside his police orderly.
However, it was learned that his driver, who sustained gunshot injuries, was taken to hospital, where doctors have been battling to save his life.
His official vehicle, which was riddled with bullets, was in the gutter, the driver having lost control of the vehicle.
It was not clear who the killers were or why they eliminated him.
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state has visited the crime scene.
