Gunmen attack Enugu army checkpoint

Gunmen have attacked an army checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu along Amechi-Agbani road in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, and killed an unconfirmed number of soldiers and policemen.

The attack, The Punch gathered happened on Tuesday morning, at about 7:30 am.

According to sources, the hoodlums stormed the checkpoint in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus.

The gunmen had earlier attacked the checkpoint three times, with Tuesday’s attack making it the fourth time.

The previous attacks claimed no fewer than 12 lives including, about eight policemen.

Sources told our correspondent that gunmen, when they stormed the checkpoint, immediately opened fire at the combined team of police and military.

Although, number of casualties were still sketchy, sources said that all the soldiers and policemen at the checkpoint were killed.

Some unconfirmed reports said that three soldiers and two policemen were killed in the attack while three soldiers escaped with various degrees of injury.

Motorists and residents nearby were reported to have scampered for safety as bullets rained like water in their houses during the shooting between the hoodlums and security operatives.

In the last attack on the checkpoint which was previously manned by police, four residents of nearby communities were killed during the exchange of gunshots.

However, motorists plying the road, have reportedly been subjected to inhumane treatment at hands of soldiers deployed after the hoodlums who had fled after the attack.

“Commuters in tricycle going to Agbani from Amechi were roughly manhandled by soldiers. They were going to villages searching for young men and parking them to their Barack in chains,” said the motorists who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Efforts to get police reaction were unsuccessful as the Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not pick up his calls.
