Unknown gunmen have reportedly abducted 11 workers of Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
The worker were allegedly abducted along Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, within the Imo/Abia boundary of Leru Community.
The kidnap of the workers who, at the time of this report, are still in the custody of their abductors, has thrown the entire Umunneochi council and members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the state into confusion as they have resorted to divine intervention for the safety of their colleagues.
It was gathered that their colleagues gathered at the council headquarters to hold a special prayer session to seek the face of God for the safety and immediate release of their colleagues.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Geoffrey Ogbonna is yet to respond to the SMS sent to him.
However, the state President of NULGE, Comrade Ikechi Nwaigwe in a telephone chat with The Nation confirmed the kidnap of the members by gunmen.
According to him, the workers who were in a commercial bus were kidnapped on Saturday as they were returning from a traditional marriage of one of their colleagues.
The NULGE President, who stated that the matter has been reported at the Umunneochi Police Divisional Headquarters, however, commended the chairman of the council, Mr Ifeanyi Madu for his efforts in ensuring that the workers were released.
Unconfirmed reports had it that the kidnappers, who had demanded N50 million ransoms, have reduced it to N5 million.
