Fire guts Nnewi market, destroys goods

Goods worth millions of naira have been gutted by fire in Okpuno Egbu Market, Umudim Nnewi in Anambra State.

The fire started at about 10pm on Saturday.

Director of Anambra Fire Service, Martin Agbili, an engineer, confirmed the incident. According to him, no life was lost.

He thanked the public, security agencies and his men for ensuring the safety of the residents.

Agbili said: “We received the distress call at about 22:25hrs of 01-01-2022 of fire outbreak at Okpuno Egbu Market, Umudim Nnewi.Our fire truck and firefighters at Nnewi were deployed immediately to the fire incident scene.

“At the same time, fire trucks and firefighters were also deployed from Awka to Nnewi for assistance.

“As at the time of this report, the cause of the fire outbreak is unknown but will be acertained after fire investigation.There is no loss of life but the fire affected parts of the market.We were able to control it from further spread during the fire fighting.The fire outbreak is under control.”
