Abia – Christian Ede, has reportedly died while being detained at a police station in Abia State.

The father of four reportedly passed away in a cell at Ndiegoro Police Division in Aba South council of the state.

It was gathered that Ede died as a result of the injuries he sustained while at the Ndiegoro Police Division cell.

Ede was said to have been detained at the Ndiegoro Police Division after his neighbour in the market accused him of stealing from his shop.

Efforts to reach the wife of the deceased, Chinwe, proved abortive as her mobile line until the time of filing the report was still unreachable.

Sources close to the family claimed that their efforts to bail the deceased failed as the police at Ndiegoro insisted that he must pay for what he allegedly stole.

According to the sources, about one week of Ede’s detention, the family got a call from the police that they should report at the police station.

At the station, the family members were told that Ede slumped and died in the cell, The Nation learnt.

The man rushed him to a private hospital where he was confirmed dead and his body deposited in their morgue.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna, in a text message, said: “The information is not true; nothing like that happened in Ndiegoro or elsewhere in Aba”.
