Devise fresh anti-crime strategy, IG tells INTERPOL

    The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has said the International Criminal Police Organisation, commonly known as INTERPOL, must develop fresh strategies to tackle the new crime dimensions.

    Speaking at the opening ceremony of INTERPOL 2021 week in Abuja on Monday, the IG said the organization has become the most critical global police network that combats the global challenges and hence, the need for fresh strategy to tackle crimes.

    Baba assured that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to offer support and collaboration with INTERPOL in tackling crimes in the country and around the world.

    Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi said Nigeria has been facing different criminal challenges which he said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was determined to address.

    “This is a very unique event because it is appropriate for the current security challenges. We will support and provide all necessary tools for the police and the Nigeria INTERPOL to ensure they succeed,” he pledged.

    The head of INTERPOL in Nigeria, AIG Garba Umar said the organization has been supporting law enforcement in global monitoring of criminal elements and provision of intelligence which has led to the arrest and repatriation of prominent Nigerians who were running from justice.

    He also said among the 124 INTERPOL member countries, Nigeria ranked first in Africa, adding that it gave intelligence to various security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Nigeria Immigration Service, among others.
