Omoyele Sowore, a human rights campaigner, has been released by the Nigerian Police Force.

On Thursday, police arrested Sowore illegally on the basis of a false petition filed by Ned Nwoko, a former member of the House of Representatives.

“Released from Nigeria Police Force idiotic arrest and detention. They claimed I defamed a criminal, Ned Nwoko! Useless people. ‪#RevolutionNow‬ ‪#WeCantContinueLikeThis,” the activist posted on Twitter after his release.‬

Sowore had been detained earlier by a group of armed police officers who had taken siege to the Court of Appeal’s entrance.

After that, he was brought to the Guzape office of the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), also known as Abattoir.

Sowore’s lawyers, Abubakar Marshal and Inibehe Effiong, were also barred from meeting him when they arrived at the prison.

The lawyers were asked to leave by the police officers stationed at the gate, who said they didn’t have permission to visit him.
