Awka, Anambra State capital has been besieged with unrest stemming from inter-cult rivalry, lately. This has propelled and ushered in the ‘Bakassi Boys‘ an unorthodox vigilante group who engage in jungle justice. The group has resurfaced in Anambra after two decades, killing six suspects.
Bakassi Boys arrived in Awka, on Saturday with their first six victims who were suspected cultists burnt on Monday.
According to BBC Igbo, Bakassi Boys were invited by a prominent politician (whose name wasn’t mentioned), to salvage the situation and restore sanity in Awka.
Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu said he had no information about them, but a senior officer confirmed that they arrived on Saturday.
The officer provided no further information.
“That’s the only thing I can tell you for now, let’s see how things work out in days and weeks to come,” he said.
“If they engage in jungle justice, nobody will talk, especially the lawyers and human rights groups, but when police engage in such, the whole world will tumble and that’s what the state deserves at this moment, ” the source said.
