Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, has singled out Taiwo Awoniyi for praise after Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, on Tuesday.
Okocha said that Awoniyi kept Egypt’s defence so busy and other Super Eagles players capitalized on it.
Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in their 2021 AFCON opener, thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half goal.
Speaking on Supersport, Okocha highlighted how Awoniyi sacrificed himself for Augustine Eguavoen’s side by putting pressure on Egypt’s defence.
He said: “Make yourself a nuisance [if you cannot score], work hard for the team.
“You can say that he’s selfless, he’s working ever so hard, he’s kept that defence so busy and others are capitalizing on that.”
Nigeria’s next game is against Sudan on Saturday.
