Will the internal rancour in the leading opposition parties in Abia State, the seeming inability of All Progressives Congress (APC) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), to resolve their internal differences, enbolden the ruling PDP to discard zoning agreement and public sentiment against fielding an alleged unpopular aspirant as its governorship candidate in 2023 elections? Also, will the current political realities lead former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu to sponsor one of his brothers for the Abia State governorship race in 2023?
These are some of the questions that have arisen from the latest moves made by the two strong political machineries in Abia State vis-a-vis the seeming inability of the leadership of the leading opposition parties in the state (the APC and APGA) to resolve their internal differences and unite their members. The chances of the opposition to sack the ruling PDP from government in 2023 is currently threatened by the internal rancour currently ravaging the leading opposition political parties in the state, including APC and APGA.
The internal disagreements in these leading opposition parties in the state have become so pronounced that the ruling PDP, recently boasted that it is not threatened by the efforts currently made by the opposition to unseat it in 2023. The State Chairman of PDP, Chief Asiforo Okere, once said “PDP is not threatened by the opposition. The opposition is not on ground in Abia; they make noise and only exist on social media. The only people threatened by the opposition are those who aren’t on ground and are only on social media.”
A PDP insider in the state also confided that PDP in Abia is happy that the opposition parties are unable to resolve their internal disagreements. “If they continue to quarrel amongst themselves, then 2023 will be an easy win for PDP,” the source said.
Rancorous APC
The intrigues that have dogged the fortunes of Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which peaked recently when the party recorded parallel congresses, has raised observers’ fears over APC’s preparedness to produce Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s successor in 2023. This is so because in spite of the widespread criticisms of Abia State’s PDP-led government over poor performance and the consequent high expectation that APC, which now houses many Abia prominent politicians, should rise up to the task of producing the next governor of Abia State in 2023, recent in-fighting in Abia APC may spell its doom, except a more embracing effort is made quickly to ensure urgent reconciliation.
