National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman, Buba Marwa has urged political parties to make drug tests a part of screening requirements for aspirants vying for 2023 tickets.
Marwa spoke on Wednesday at the 2022 First Quarter Best Performing Commands Awards at the national headquarters in Abuja.
The retired General said he had long advocated for drug tests for officeholders and those aspiring for positions.
Marwa noted that public office demands a lot of responsibility and it is necessary to be certain if the holders are not addicts.
The chairman said such persons might use government money to consume cocaine and other illicit drugs.
“The person will not be in a stable condition to handle the affairs he has been entrusted with.
“We have advocated and will continue to advocate that drug tests be conducted for politicians. Some state governments, like Kano, are already doing this.
“Not just politicians, but government appointees. I’ve just sent a letter this morning to the National Chairman of APC.”
Marwa disclosed he would visit parties on the issue to stress the importance of incorporating drug tests in screening processes
“We will do the same to the PDP and other important parties”, the NDLEA chief added.
